Fast Fashion?
Fast Fashion or Slow Style? Which will you choose?
I recently chose a simple yet unusual top from a well-known, large fast fashion house. I saw it the day it arrived on the rack and decided to track its life in store or online. One week!
When I shop for basics – the white T-shirt, socks, etc – I will initially buy only one item. I wear and wash it once or twice and if I’m happy with it, I’ll buy more.
It’s hard to do that with fast fashion. And even if I can do the wear and wash test and get back to the store within a week (I live in a rural area), the garment is unlikely to have passed the test. It will be misshapen or otherwise not worth replicating.
Not so with slow style. I can wear and wash, delight in the fact that it looks and feels as good as the day I bought it, consider how I feel about its place in my life and return (in person or online) at my leisure to buy more. I like that. It’s comforting knowing that it will still be there.
Now, never mind the ecological damage done by fast fashion’s manufacturing and disposal, wouldn’t you rather spend your precious time buying a quality garment that will keep looking good for years to come? When I shop for core pieces like jackets, jeans or suits, I’m even more fastidious.
And here are some other benefits of slow style –
It doesn’t go out of fashion next season.
It’s your style, not what some celebrity is spruiking.
It’s well-made and will last for many years, which is good for your wallet and good for the environment.
